Frequently asked questions
Asked briefly. Answered clearly.
Devices, transfers, cloud and account – the answers people ask for most.
Do both sides need the same kind of device?
No. iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux and the browser send files to each other. You pick the person or device, pipeit finds the route.
Can I use pipeit without installing an app?
Yes, through the browser entry. The apps add nearby transfer without router or internet, Finder, Explorer and Files app integration and your paired devices.
Can a transfer work without the internet?
Yes. The apps for iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac and Linux connect directly when nearby: over Wi-Fi Aware without a router or on the same Wi-Fi or LAN. Only the browser needs a reachable network route. If no direct route exists, an encrypted relay carries the file without being able to read it.
What happens if a connection drops?
A transfer resumes where it stopped; parts already received are not sent again. Check the transfer for its current state.
Can I send to a Linux server?
Yes. Install the pipeit agent on the server and authorize it; it then appears as a named destination. It manages the receiving directory and never executes incoming files.
Can anyone send me a file?
Contacts, devices and team permissions determine allowed access. Unknown senders do not get general write access to your device.
Is pipeit a cloud drive?
It can be both. You can send files directly between devices and servers, or keep them in pipeit Cloud with sync, search, versions and sharing. They are separate ways with different privacy: direct transfers are end-to-end encrypted, cloud files are stored so the service can work with them. Cloud storage keeps the folders you choose and their versions; it is not a full backup of your device.
Do AI integrations work identically in every chat?
The core is the same everywhere: you name the destination, pipeit delivers. How the AI reaches your files differs per client – the integrations page names the route for Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Cursor and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Are cloud files end-to-end encrypted?
No. Cloud files are stored so that pipeit can build search, thumbnails and safety scans for shared links, which means the service can read them. Files you send directly are end-to-end encrypted. If a file must stay private, send it directly.
What happens when I run out of storage?
You can still open, download and delete files. New uploads and changes that need more space wait until you free up space or choose a larger plan. pipeit does not delete files to make room.
Can I get back a file I deleted?
Deleted files go to the trash, and earlier versions are kept for 30 days on Personal plans and for 90 days in Business workspaces. After that period they cannot be restored.
How do I sign in?
Sign in with an email code or an available SSO provider. Alternatively, approve your new device from a device where you are already signed in.
How do I connect a new device?
Your new device displays a QR code or a code you can enter. Scan the QR code with a signed-in mobile app, review the device details and approve the connection; you can also approve devices from a signed-in desktop app.
